Like the men's team, the USA
women's track and field contingent improved on its showing
in 1964, although in total medal placings, the count was the
same...four. At Mexico City, however, the count was the haul
was three golds and one silver, while in point placings
(fourth, fifth, and sixth) the girls pulled in eight as
compared to a solitary
fourth place in 1964.
Competition was tough Olympic records falling in nine
events.
Wyomia Tyus led the team with
two gold medal triumphs. Not only did she repeat as 100
meter champion but she anchored the USA 4x100 meter relay
team to an Olympic and world record victory. In addition,
Madeline Manning broke up the European monopoly in the 800
meters, speeding to a decisive win in world record-equalling
time.
